Steve Batkin. Saturday. 28.3.2020. Glimmer Of Hope In A Deindustrialized Region And City. Stoke-on-Trent's River Trent Attracts A Little Egret. Above image is a little egret a bird which was once very common in Britain but unfortunately during the late middle ages was extirpated along with many other wild birds and animals. Clearly former and present British political establishments have never had much interest in wildlife and participated in or just quite simply ignored the complete destruction of many beautiful creatures through hunting and deforestation; this ran simultaneously with the development of Britain's industrial revolution and the industrialists reckless pollution by chemicals of rivers, canals, streams, brooks and even lakes; farmers also began to use dangerous chemicals in the form of pesticides on the land as well as draining marshes. However much of Britain's industry has now been lost with British political establishment investors deciding they can make more money by investing in Far Eastern countries who employ very cheap Labour in their industry: Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire where I live has been particularly ravaged with very little industry left. The city now employs thousands of none productive workers like care workers which is a job I do myself, I work with the mentally incapacitated many of whom were born unfortunate and will never be able to live on their own independently. Recently while walking home from a work shift I walked a stretch of the River Trent before I crossed over a bridge and noticed two magpies mobbing a bird, on closer scrutiny I realized the bird being mobbed was a little egret. Presumably the River Trent is becoming much cleaner having attracted an uncommon bird like the little egret which is now a protected species as are most British birds: political establishment Royalty and their banking and politician friends still do shoot game birds, pheasants, grouse, ducks etc. and kill anything they perceive as a threat to the game birds but this's a gloomy subject for another article. On a brighter note the protection of some birds in recent decades and cleaner water is allowing birds from Europe to come over to Britain and reestablish themselves after several centuries of extinction. Something positive at last!
