Steve Batkin- Wednesday.13.5.2020. Unique Writer From The potteries Has Passed On. Roy Whitfield Wrote Books About Potters' Heritage. Above image is the late Roy Whitfield who died last autumn at the age of 91 years, he was born in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England in 1928. Roy grew up prior and during the Second World War and as a youngster observed the American soldiers (Yanks) who were based in his neighbourhood, he certainly had some funny stories to tell about them. Roy lived in the south of Stoke-on-Trent called Longton (Neckend) in Edensor Road, an area sandwiched between two huge marl holes. In those days many housing estates in the city of Stoke-on-Trent didn't exist and were actually waste pottery tipping grounds. Roy became a pottery worker and spent much of his life working in that industry before most of the industry was wrecked through globalism and greed: family companies eventually went public and were listed on the stock exchange (City), they borrowed money from sharks (banks), debentures, went through mergers and inevitably collapsed trying to compete against Far Eastern cheap labour, they tried out sourcing setting up factories abroad and using foreign labour but not much seemed to work, then of course the companies inevitably collapsed went into receivership and the asset strippers moved in -- today houses and flats are built on former pottery factory sites with many foreign cheap labour immigrants moving into the properties. Anyway back to Roy who was greatly upset by all the damage the globalists had done to the pottery industry and this helped to influence him writing his books. Roy's books are a mixture of reality, facts, comedy, satire and sadness. The Potters' Rot Series was Roy's trade mark referring to silicosis the lung disease from pottery dust. Roy's work was unique and will be sadly missed.
